The Nigerian stock market has emerged as the strongest-performing equity market in the world in U.S. dollar terms this year, moving ahead of South Korea as investors increasingly respond to the country’s improving economic fundamentals and reform efforts.

Figures compiled by Bloomberg across 92 stock exchanges show Nigerian equities have generated a 67 per cent return in dollar terms since the beginning of the year, placing them just ahead of South Korea, whose market has returned 66 per cent over the same period.

The latest performance reflects a dramatic turnaround for the Nigerian stock market, which only recently struggled with weak investor confidence and prolonged foreign exchange volatility.

Analysts attribute the rally to a combination of economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, improved liquidity in the foreign exchange market, stronger crude oil prices and renewed appetite from international investors. The appreciation of the naira by roughly four per cent against the U.S. dollar this year has also enhanced returns for foreign investors.

Market optimism grew further after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Nigeria is being considered for an upgrade to frontier market status, a move that could encourage more institutional investors to channel funds into the country’s capital market.

Nigeria’s impressive performance has coincided with a slowdown in South Korea, whose equity market has lost momentum after months of rapid gains linked to the artificial intelligence boom.

The country’s benchmark Kospi Index has now entered bear market territory after shedding more than 22 per cent from its June high, as investors reassess the sustainability of the AI-driven rally. At the same time, the South Korean won has fallen by about five per cent against the U.S. dollar this year, making it one of Asia’s weakest-performing currencies.

Experts also believe another boost could come from the planned listing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, intends to float about 10 per cent of the refinery through listings on several African stock exchanges, a move expected to deepen the Nigerian stock market and attract additional domestic and international investors.

Should the current trend continue, the Nigerian stock market is expected to consolidate its standing as one of the most attractive destinations for investors seeking opportunities in frontier and emerging economies.
