Nigeria’s music scene continues to dominate the 66th Grammy Awards nominations. The country’s musical maestros—Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide—have landed nominations, showcasing Nigeria’s undeniable creative prowess in West Africa.
Grammy icon Burna Boy snatched up a total of four nominations, while Davido, in his debut, secured three nods. The anticipation surrounding Burna Boy’s nomination was no shocker, given his track record.
Asake, Arya Starr, and Olamide each clinched a single nomination. All five Nigerian artists found themselves vying for the inaugural Best African Music Performance category, joined by South Africa’s Tyla.
The newly minted category includes Asake and Olamide’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Davido and Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable,’ and Tyla’s ‘Water.’
Burna Boy’s additional nominations extend to ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ featuring 21 Savage for Best Melodic Rap, ‘I Told Them’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Alone’ for Best Global Music Performance.
Davido’s extra nominations encompass ‘Timeless’ for Best Global Music Album and ‘Feel’ for Best Global Music Performance. A jubilant Davido, ecstatic about the recognition, shared his elation on X with a tweet: “3 nominations at the Grammys!! Delay is not Denial!!”
The 66th Grammy Awards ceremony is slated for February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. With Davido clinching a nomination after a considerable wait, it’s clear the fans of Wizkid might need a moment to digest this news. Tears and cheers, the music drama continues!
