Nigeria’s Under-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, have secured their place in the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. They achieved this by defeating Liberia 2-0 in Abuja, resulting in a comprehensive 6-1 aggregate win.
In the decisive second leg held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Chidi Harmony was the standout performer, netting both goals to seal Nigeria’s victory. Her remarkable performance throughout the qualifiers saw her tally up to 13 goals, making her one of the top scorers in the series.
The Flamingos had laid a strong foundation for qualification with a commanding 4-1 win in the first leg in Monrovia. That match saw goals from Harmony Chidi, Shakirat Moshood, Peace Effiong, and substitute Blessing Ifitezue. Despite Liberia managing a late penalty consolation, the Flamingos were in complete control.
This qualification adds to a successful year for Nigerian women’s football. Following the Super Falcons’ qualification for the Olympics and the Falconets securing their World Cup spot, the Flamingos’ success marks a perfect trio of achievements for Nigeria’s female teams.
The Flamingos have a proud history in the U-17 Women’s World Cup, having participated in every tournament since its inception in 2008. They have consistently performed well, reaching significant milestones, including a bronze medal in the 2022 edition held in India.
As they prepare for the World Cup in the Dominican Republic, the Flamingos will be looking to build on their impressive qualifying campaign and continue their strong tradition on the global stage.
