Ukrainian troops who launched a surprise attack in Russia’s Kursk region last summer are now almost surrounded by Russian forces, according to open-source battlefield maps. Russia’s counteroffensive has cut off Ukraine’s key supply lines, pushing Kyiv into a difficult military position.
In just three days, Russian forces have split the Ukrainian troops into two, leaving the main force with limited access to reinforcements. Military analysts warn that Ukraine may soon have no choice but to retreat, a move that would be both politically humiliating and militarily dangerous.
Ukraine Under Pressure as U.S. Suspends Intelligence Sharing
Ukraine’s worsening battlefield position comes as Washington halts intelligence sharing with Kyiv, further complicating Ukraine’s defensive efforts in Kursk.
Pasi Paroinen, a military analyst at Black Bird Group, described the situation as “very bad” for Ukraine.
“If Ukrainian forces are not able to restore the situation quickly, they could be encircled or forced into a dangerous retreat under Russian drone and artillery fire,” he told Reuters.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the United States is pressuring President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to consider a ceasefire with Russia, even as Moscow’s troops continue their advance inside Ukraine.
Russia Gains Ground While Ukraine Struggles to Hold Kursk
Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk last August was a historic military operation, marking the first major attack on Russian soil since World War II.
At the time, Zelenskyy justified the attack, stating that it would force Russia to redirect its military resources, easing the pressure on Ukraine’s eastern front while giving Kyiv a bargaining advantage in future peace negotiations.
However, the situation has since shifted in Russia’s favor. Russian President Vladimir Putin has remained firm, insisting that Kursk will be fully retaken and rejecting any notion of making it part of peace talks.
Russia’s Drone Warfare and the Future of Kursk
Recent battlefield data from Deep State, a respected Ukrainian military blog, shows that three-quarters of Ukraine’s force inside Russia is now almost completely surrounded. The remaining Ukrainian soldiers are connected to the border by a narrow corridor just 1 km long, which Russian forces are actively working to cut off.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that 32 Russian attacks in Kursk were repelled within the last 24 hours.
However, Russian war bloggers claim that Moscow’s troops have broken through key defensive positions, capturing important Ukrainian supply routes.
Deep State reported, “Russia has a major advantage in drones, particularly FPV drones, which are used for both reconnaissance and precision strikes on Ukrainian forces.”
As the battle for Kursk escalates, the world is watching closely. Will Ukraine manage to hold its position, or will it be forced into a strategic retreat? The next few days could determine the course of the war.
