Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s celebrated economist and global leader, has been chosen again to be the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for another term. This milestone solidifies her position as a key figure in global trade and economic diplomacy.
The WTO announced Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment on Saturday, mentioning that she was the sole candidate for the position considered for the job. Her new four-year term will start when her current one ends, making sure there is a smooth transition at the global trade organisation.
Okonjo-Iweala, who previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, said on September 16 that she was ready to serve another term. Since she was first appointed in March 2021, she has managed important changes and dealt with difficult trade problems during global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and political conflicts.
The WTO started its process for choosing a new leader on October 8, asking member countries to suggest names. But by the time the deadline on November 8 arrived, no new names were added. Petter Olberg, Chairman of the WTO General Council, told member countries in a formal message that Okonjo-Iweala would be the only person considered for the job, paving the way for her reappointment.
Okonjo-Iweala has been praised a lot for her work to update the WTO and push for better trade rules, especially for countries that are still developing. Her reappointment has brought many messages of congratulations, including from Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also celebrated her 70th birthday this year.
Tinubu said her accomplishments make Nigeria and Africa proud, and he praised her for overcoming challenges and being a great example of leadership for the whole world.
