Northern Politicians Accuse Tinubu of Favoritism in Federal Appointments

Northern politicians have increasingly voiced their discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, calling for his removal and that of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. In a recent interview with Saturday Sun, a northern politician speaking on condition of anonymity accused the President of promoting ethnic favoritism and sidelining other regions in key federal appointments.

Allegations of Ethnic Favoritism

The anonymous source alleged that Tinubu’s appointments to critical positions in federal ministries and agencies have overwhelmingly favored individuals from his ethnic group, leaving many Nigerians, particularly in the North, feeling marginalized. The source pointed to what he described as “lopsided appointments” as a major factor contributing to declining public trust in the administration.

“His appointments are too lopsided. That is why most Nigerians don’t seem to trust his Tax Reform Bills,” the source claimed. He further criticized the dominance of individuals from Tinubu’s ethnic group in the financial and economic sectors, stating, “We have never in our recent history had one ethnic group dominate these critical sectors.

The Finance Minister, FIRS boss, CBN governor, Tax Reform Committee chair, Customs boss they’re all from his ethnic group. And just two days ago, the acting Accountant-General of the Federation was appointed also from his clique.”

Policies Viewed as Anti-Social

The criticism went beyond appointments, with the source describing Tinubu’s policies as “anti-social” and detached from the needs of ordinary Nigerians. “How can we trust anything that comes out of this kind of system?” the source asked.

One of the most contentious points raised was Tinubu’s foreign policy stance regarding Niger Republic. “Majority of us have not forgotten how he planned to wage a war against us in the North, in the name of declaring war on Niger Republic,” the source stated. He also accused Tinubu, a Muslim, of promoting policies that he perceived as anti-Islam, further deepening the sense of alienation in the northern region.

A Growing Divide

The allegations highlight the widening rift between the Tinubu administration and sections of the northern political elite. The accusations of ethnic favoritism, coupled with a perception of disregard for the North, have fueled calls for a change in leadership. As the 2027 general elections approach, the growing criticism from northern politicians emphasizes a potential challenge to Tinubu’s hold on power and the unity of the APC.

The President’s apparent inability or unwillingness to address these concerns raises questions about his commitment to fostering a truly inclusive government. Whether Tinubu can navigate these tensions and restore public trust remains uncertain, but the growing dissatisfaction among northern politicians signals a significant test for his administration.
