The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has confirmed the arrest of 32 people for vandalising shops and other properties on the first day of nationwide protest against poor administration.

CSC Babawale Afolabi, the Service’s National Public Relations Officer, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.

As a result, he stated that Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, has issued a red alert to all Zonal Commanders, Heads of Formations, and State Commandants across the 36 states and FCT.

The NSCDC Boss who led a team of operatives to monitor the protests last night in Abuja expressed concern about the attacks meted out on security agencies deployed to protect government infrastructure and the civil populace.

The CG also expressed concern that protest organisers were not present in the missing cases, allowing unscrupulous forces to infiltrate the protestors.

What they’re saying

“It is extremely regrettable that there were severe attacks on security personnel and wanton damage of property in Kaduna, Kano, Yobe, Gombe, and many other states, just as officers and soldiers were hurt and an NSCDC operational vehicle was set on fire in Katsina.

“The Commandant General further revealed that 32 offenders were apprehended by NSCDC soldiers at Sabo Gari, Bata France Road, and Murtala Mohammed Way in Kano; he said the operatives quickly intervened while outnumbered demonstrators were hauling away products worth thousands of naira.

“While the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests began on August 1, our men, who had previously been briefed on the importance of protecting all critical national assets and infrastructure, did not hesitate to apprehend 32 suspects for vandalism, looting, and property destruction.

“They would be thoroughly investigated, and legal action would be taken as needed.”Representing the NSCDC Helmsman on Day 2 of the protest, Acting DCG Operations, Phillip Ayuba fcai, has restated the Commandant General’s marching order, instructing officers and men to maintain civility and professionalism when dealing with peaceful demonstrators.

“He noted that the security agencies will not tolerate any act of violence and destruction of government facilities as those who dare would be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law”

Bottom Line

The NSCDC claims to have arrested 32 individuals for vandalism and looting. It’s crucial that these individuals are treated fairly, with their rights respected throughout the legal process.

They should provide detailed information about the incidents, including evidence of vandalism, the specific charges against the arrested individuals, and the legal process being followed.
