The Ogun State Government has announced plans to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of the stationary truck involved in the accident that led to the death of associates of Anthony Joshua last December.

At Thursday’s court sitting, the state’s senior counsel, D.O. Ogunyomi, took over the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his friends at the time of the crash.

Ogunyomi urged the court to allow the consolidation of charges against both drivers — Adamu and Kayode — who were linked to the fatal incident.

Legal advice issued by the Ogun State Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) was presented in court, recommending that Kayode be prosecuted for reckless driving, alongside the truck driver.

Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun granted the request to merge the charges, while the matter was adjourned to June 2, 2026.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Sagamu axis of Ogun State, when the SUV carrying Joshua and his companions rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

Although the boxer survived with minor injuries, two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives in the crash.

Ghami was known as Joshua’s longtime friend and strength coach, while Latif worked as his personal trainer.

Following the incident, Kayode was arrested and charged by the police with offences including dangerous driving causing death, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

The case was later transferred to the DPP for further legal review.

Earlier proceedings on March 17 saw counsel for the DPP, R.D. Kadiri, inform the court that new developments had emerged, prompting a request for additional time to incorporate fresh details into the case.

However, defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan criticised the delay, arguing that the prosecution was engaging in tactics that were slowing down the trial process.
