One Feared Dead as Protesters Clash with Security Forces Near UN Building in Abuja

One person is feared dead following a clash between protesters and security officers near the United Nations building at 12:55 p.m. today. The unfortunate event occured when security operatives fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Protest Details

The Abuja protest commenced at 12:39 p.m. with demonstrators marching from various points in Abuja. They regrouped around MKO Abiola National Stadium at the Central Business District junction, en route to Eagle’s Square, Abuja. The protesters were seen shouting warnings at security operatives against the use of brute force to stop the protest and called on President Bola Tinubu to address their grievances.

Earlier Developments

Prior to the clash, protesters had assembled at several locations across Abuja, including Berger Roundabout in Wuse Zone 6, before converging at MKO Abiola Stadium. The presence of a helicopter flying over the stadium added to the tense atmosphere.

Security Response

Security forces, including personnel from the Army Headquarters Garrison Command, NSCDC, and DSS, are actively managing the situation. FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, visited the area earlier to assess the situation
