'Open the Strait or Else': Hours After Trump's Ultimatum, Iran Torches Tanker Off Dubai

Tehran launched a drone attack that set ablaze a fully loaded oil tanker off Dubai on Tuesday, hours after President Donald Trump threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s energy infrastructure and ordered countries dependent on Gulf oil to “build up some delayed courage” and seize the Strait of Hormuz themselves.

Authorities in Dubai said the fire on the Kuwait-flagged Al-Salmi was brought under control with no oil leak and no injuries to the crew. Kuwait Petroleum Corp, the ship’s owner, confirmed the vessel’s hull was damaged.

The tanker, capable of carrying 2 million barrels of oil worth more than $200 million at current prices, was heading to Qingdao, China, carrying 1.2 million barrels of Saudi crude and 800,000 barrels of Kuwaiti crude, according to monitoring service TankerTrackers.com.

'Open the Strait or Else': Hours After Trump's Ultimatum, Iran Torches Tanker Off Dubai
The Ultimatum

Trump’s Tuesday social media post was characteristically blunt.

To nations dependent on Gulf oil, he wrote: “Build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself; the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!”

Hours later, the Al-Salmi burned.

Trump’s deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass—is April 6. The White House confirmed he wants a deal by then.

The Attack

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted a container ship in the Gulf over its ties with Israel. But shipping data suggests they may have hit the wrong vessel.

The Al-Salmi was anchored next to the Singapore-flagged Haiphong Express, which the Guards appeared to be targeting. The container ship escaped unscathed. The oil tanker did not.

“This is not precision. This is terror,” a Gulf shipping official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They don’t care who they hit. They just want to send a message: the strait is closed, and anyone in it is a target.”

The Broader War

The month-old conflict has spread across the region, killing thousands and threatening to send the global economy into a tailspin.

Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen have entered the war, firing at Israel. Turkey reported Monday that a ballistic missile launched from Iran entered Turkish airspace before being shot down. The war has also revived conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran, which has suffered the highest casualty toll, has fired at targets in Gulf Arab states where the U.S. has military bases. Iran’s military spokesman said targets included “hideouts” of U.S. military personnel in five bases in the region and in Israel.

Blasts echoed through Dubai on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia’s civil defence said falling debris caused limited damage after a drone was intercepted in Kharj province. Explosions were heard in Tehran, with residents in the eastern Pirouzi district reporting power outages. A strike on a Shi’ite Muslim congregation hall in the northwestern city of Zanjan killed three people.

The Israeli military said it carried out overnight airstrikes in Tehran targeting a ballistic missile warhead factory, weapons research sites and missile launch systems.

The Ground War Looms

Thousands of soldiers from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division have started arriving in the Middle East, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Monday. The reinforcements expand Trump’s options to include a potential ground assault in Iran.

Trump has not ruled that out. He has said repeatedly that “all options are on the table.”

The Economic Toll

Crude oil prices spiked again after the tanker attack. Benchmark Brent crude has climbed above $114 per barrel, putting it on course for a record monthly gain.

In the United States, the national average retail price of gasoline crossed $4 a gallon for the first time in over three years on Monday, according to GasBuddy.

For Trump, the price spike is a political headache before November’s midterm elections. For American households already stretched by inflation, it is a direct hit to the wallet.

The European Union’s energy chief has warned member states to prepare for a “prolonged disruption” to energy markets.

Diplomacy Fails

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson called the U.S. peace proposals received via intermediaries “unrealistic, illogical and excessive.”

Pakistan is seeking to mediate, with its foreign minister due to discuss the conflict during a visit to China on Tuesday after hosting talks with Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

China, one of Iran’s closest allies and the biggest buyer of its oil, issued a new appeal to all sides to halt military operations. It said three Chinese ships had recently been allowed to sail through the Strait of Hormuz.

The message was clear: Beijing wants the oil flowing. But its leverage over Tehran appears limited.

What Comes Next

Trump’s April 6 deadline is days away. Iran has shown no sign of backing down. The 82nd Airborne is arriving. The tankers are burning.

“We don’t know where this ends,” a senior Gulf diplomat told Reuters. “We know where it started. We know where it is now. But no one can tell you where it goes from here.”

For now, the Strait of Hormuz remains a shooting gallery. The oil keeps flowing—at higher prices, higher risk, and with the constant threat that the next attack might be the one that shuts it down completely.
