On June 8, 2023, Justice O. A. Okunuga of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja adjourned the alleged fraud trial involving Sennaike Opeoluwa until June 28, 2023, for the purpose of hearing the case.
Sennaike Opeoluwa and his company, Sennaike Consulting Limited, were charged with six counts by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 9, 2023. The charges include obtaining money by false pretence, forgery, and possession of false documents.
The defendants were accused of fraudulently obtaining $5 million and N800 million from unsuspecting members of the public. Opeoluwa pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
During the May 31, 2023 sitting, Opeoluwa’s counsel, Akeem Akinroye, applied for bail on behalf of his client and requested the court to exercise its discretion in favor of Opeoluwa, emphasizing that he is not a flight risk and will not abscond.
The prosecution, however, urged the court to reject the bail application and proceed with an accelerated hearing.
After considering the arguments presented by both parties, Justice Okunuga ruled on June 8, granting bail to the defendant in the amount of N50 million. Opeoluwa must provide two sureties who are gainfully employed and can demonstrate tax payment for the past three years.
Furthermore, the defendant was instructed to surrender his passport to the Chief Registrar of the court
