Over 500 Migrants Rescued off Spain’s Canary Islands as Arrivals Near Record High

The Spanish coastguard reported the successful rescue of more than 500 migrants in the Atlantic Ocean near Spain’s Canary Islands on Saturday, with the rescue operation revealing the tragic discovery of two deceased individuals among those saved from four boats off El Hierro, the smallest and westernmost of the Canary Islands. Regrettably, two more individuals succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital, as confirmed by the Spanish Civil Guard, which also participated in the rescue efforts that included women and children among the survivors.

The surge in arrivals this year has brought the number of undocumented migrants reaching the Canary Islands to an alarming level, nearing the record set in 2006. Factors such as milder weather and calmer seas since September have facilitated attempts to cross the perilous Atlantic route from Africa to the Spanish archipelago.

According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, the influx of undocumented migrants in the first 10 months of 2023 amounted to 30,705, marking a staggering 111% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This number is perilously close to the full-year record of 31,678 migrants that arrived on the Canary Islands in 2006, a year when alternative routes to Europe were obstructed. Last year, the Canary Islands accounted for the majority of the 43,290 undocumented migrants who arrived in Spain by sea.

Positioned approximately 100 km (60 miles) off Africa’s western coastline, the Canary Islands have become a primary destination for migrants from countries like Senegal and other African nations, who seek refuge from conflict or aspire to build a better life in Spain.

In response to the escalating situation, the Spanish government has announced plans to establish additional emergency accommodations for around 3,000 migrants in military barracks, hotels, and hostels. This step underscores the pressing need to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of the migrants seeking refuge in Spain.
