Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared August 20 a work-free day to celebrate 2024 Isese Day, a move that has generated alot of responses from across the state and beyond. Governor Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, announced this decision through a statement released on Wednesday. The circular, issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, reinforces Makinde’s commitment to honoring Isese Day.
The governor had previously committed to observing August 20 as a work-free day annually in celebration of Isese Day. This day is dedicated to the traditional Yoruba religious practices, a significant aspect of Yoruba culture that reveres the traditional gods and spiritual practices of the Yoruba people.
In his announcement, Makinde encouraged all traditional worshippers and residents of Oyo State to use the day for reflection, prayer, and supplication for the peace, unity, and stability of both the state and the nation at large. It’s an invitation to pause the hustle and bustle of daily life and to focus on spiritual and communal well-being.
Isese Day, which celebrates traditional Yoruba religion and culture, has become a focal point for discussions about the place of indigenous practices in contemporary Nigerian society. This day is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people, a heritage often overshadowed by the dominance of Christianity and Islam in the region. It represents a call to honour and preserve traditional practices that have been part of Yoruba history for centuries.
Supporters applaud the governor for acknowledging and respecting the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Yoruba people. They view this as a progressive step towards inclusivity and cultural appreciation in a country where traditional beliefs often struggle for recognition amidst the prevailing major religions.
As August 20 approaches, Oyo State will witness a unique celebration of its traditional roots, with offices and businesses observing the work-free day.
