Fuel pump operators in Pakistan announced a nationwide strike on July 22 in response to the ongoing inflation crisis affecting their businesses. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, representing over 10,000 members, will close all petrol pumps from 6 p.m. on that day.
The association is demanding an increase in the dealership margin, highlighting the negative impact of high interest rates and inflation on their operations. They attribute a 30% decline in sales to the smuggling of Iranian fuel into the country.
Abdul Sami Khan, the chairman of the association, stated that around 8,000-9,000 operators will participate in the strike.
Pakistan is grappling with economic challenges, including a weakening currency and persistent inflation. The national rate reached 29.4% in June, down from a record high of 38% in May.
