The Saint Laurent SS25 collection which “hard launched” on Tuesday, September 24th, has been all I could think of since it dropped. The designs gave off major 80s vibes – but with a modern twist. The power suits and sleek accessories had me imagining that I was strutting down a Parisian runway myself, no thanks to Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of the fashion powerhouse.
More than the designs, (which I was absolutely falling over myself for), the highlight of the show for me was Bella Hadid making a comeback to the fashion runways after a two-year hiatus and I am here for it.
The Key Themes and Inspirations
Anthony Vaccarello, the creative genius behind the SS25 collection had drawn inspiration from the 1980s era, imbibing the spirit of Yves Saint Laurent himself. This year, the women’s collection celebrated oversized silhouettes, sharp tailoring, and a monochromatic palette, all of which were symbols of 80s fashion.
Vaccarello’s inspiration is made evident in the structured blazers with overstated shoulder pads, similar to the power suits that were in vogue in the 80s. The use of opulent fabrics like silk, satin, and velvet equally also served to add a hint of opulence to the collection, while the black, white, and neutral color scheme kept the look timeless and classical.
The Standout Pieces
Some of the standout pieces I loved from the runway were:
– Power Suits:
This was my most iconic look of the entire collection. Bella Hadid bodied the power suit she wore that featured exaggerated shoulder pads when she strutted down the runway. The sharp tailoring of the fit, her slicked-back bun and black-rimmed glasses give off a confident, espionage-y vibe.
– Trench Coats:
I noticed that trench coats made a more notable appearance in Paris fashion week with Schiaparelli and now Saint Laurent showing out with their designs of this fashion item. For Saint Laurent, it was reimagined with a modern flair. A piece I loved was a sleek, black trench coat that was paired with a wide belt that cinched the waist.
– Boxy Blazers:
Boxy blazers were another highlight of mine and they came in various shades of black and white. The blazers I saw on the runway were paired with tailored trousers, creating a structured and relaxed look.
– Accessories:
The accessories which consisted of oversized gold bangles and sunglasses was a nod to the brand’s signature style. Shiny leather belts and fine, silk ties completed the looks, further emphasizing the professional aura.
Future Predictions
Based on the Saint Laurent SS25 collection, here are some of my fun predictions for future fashion trends:
- A return of the 80’s businessman look (the power suits, trench coats)
- Statement eyewear becoming a trend as it’ll help to pull off the office/businessman look.
