Just seven days after People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national executives council ratified the zoning of national chairman slot zoned to the North by the Enugu’s State governor led zoning committee of the party, the party has nominated Senator Iyorchia Ayu as their consensus candidate from the zone.
Ayu who was the Senate president in the third republic and also a long time political associate of former Vice-president and presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2019 election was unanimously chosen among the three candidates vying for the position by the northern stakeholders of the party after their meeting in Bauchi, Bauchi State.
Their position was made known to the public by Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa after the meeting earlier today. He stated that there is no vanquish nor victor in the selection of Ayu.
In his words, “Out of the three northern candidates that all the three zones produced, the candidates themselves, in the spirit of unity and togetherness, in the spirit of ensuring that PDP emerges and benefits from our efforts so that we can win the 2023 general election, distinguished senator Iyorchia Ayu has emerged as a consensus candidate of the north.”
He further stated that all of the three candidates were immensely qualified as the flag bearer from the zone, noting that there won’t be any rancour because all of those vying for the position endorsed his nomination.
With Ayu, a well known associate of Atiku’s eventual emergence as chairman in the coming party convention slated for 30 and 31 October, this will boost the chance of Atiku in the run up to the party presidential nomination come 2022.
