Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has taken decisive action to address the escalating security situation in the Mangu Local Government Area. In response to recent attacks by gunmen that resulted in tragic loss of life and property, Governor Mutfwang has imposed a 24-hour curfew throughout the entire region.

The governor’s announcement, conveyed through a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, highlighted the necessity of restoring law and order in the area. The curfew will remain in effect until further notice, with the exception of essential personnel and security forces who will be permitted to carry out their duties.

The government has assured the public that it is working tirelessly to restore peace and security in the state.Consequently, movements within the Local Government have been banned until further notice except for security personnel and persons on essential duties.

“Security agencies have therefore been directed to ensure total enforcement of the curfew.”

This move follows similar curfews imposed in Mangu in May and June, prompted by violent attacks that claimed the lives of at least 38 individuals. Governor Mutfwang had previously reported that over 150 people lost their lives within a three-week period in Mangu, although the exact reasons behind the attacks remain unclear.

Sources have indicated that the recent onslaught by armed assailants targeted several communities within the Local Government Area, resulting in the tragic deaths of numerous residents and the destruction of homes. Bala Fwangji, the representative of the Mangu South constituency, expressed deep concern about the situation during a previous curfew in June, highlighting the urgent need for assistance to protect the local population.

The recurring security challenges in Nigeria demand immediate attention and effective solutions. It is imperative for the government to develop comprehensive strategies to overcome these issues and ensure the safety of its citizens. This requires a multifaceted approach that includes addressing underlying disputes over resources, land rights, and communal tensions, which often serve as catalysts for violence. Furthermore, it is crucial to establish robust security measures, enhance intelligence gathering, and strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively combat criminal activities.

The situation in Mangu serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for Nigeria to prioritize the security and well-being of its citizens. It is only through a concerted and coordinated effort, involving government authorities, security forces, and community leaders, that the nation can overcome these security challenges and create a safe and peaceful environment for all.

From the perspective of a Nigerian, do you believe Nigeria has the potential to overcome its numerous security challenges?
