Paul Pogba made his anticipated comeback to competitive football on Saturday entering as a substitute during Monaco’s 4-1 loss to Rennes in what he called a time of “relief and gratitude.” The French midfielder, who joined Monaco on a transfer, in June came onto the field in the 85th minute to a heartfelt standing ovation – his first game since September 2023.
The 32-year-old was out of action for over two years following a four-year suspension in February 2024 after testing positive for DHEA, a substance that enhances testosterone levels. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later shortened the suspension to 18 months enabling Pogba to restart his career than initially anticipated. However his return was postponed again month because of an injury, to his right ankle.

Speaking following the game Pogba confessed he was touched by the fans’ response. “Watching the crowd stand and cheer I never thought it would occur ” he stated. “I’m glad to be playing football the thing I cherish most.”
Pogba emphasized that he requires time to recover full fitness yet stays resolute to demonstrate his abilities. “If I don’t do well at Monaco I can forget about the national team ” he stated. “I have confidence, in myself. I never gave up hope.”
Monaco next match is in the UCL where they will face Pafos on Wednesday before hosting PSG in Ligue 1.
