Poland’s domestic security agency has initiated an investigation into a cyberattack on the nation’s railway network, causing disruptions in overnight traffic, as reported by the state-run Polish Press Agency on Saturday.
The Internal Security Agency (ABW) and the police are currently examining an unauthorized intrusion into the rail traffic management system, disclosed Stanisław Zaryn, deputy coordinator of special services.
Intruders employed railway frequencies to transmit a signal that prompted an emergency halt of trains in northwestern Poland, resulting in significant delays, as detailed by the agency.
Given recent efforts by Russia to destabilize Poland, Zaryn emphasized the gravity of such interference. “We take any signals received by the ABW seriously, especially in light of the Russian Federation’s collaboration with Belarus in these attempts,” he stated.
In a separate investigation, the state railway operator is probing the derailment of two trains and a collision involving two others that occurred on Thursday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents.
Zaryn clarified that there is currently no evidence suggesting a connection between Thursday’s incidents and the cyberattack.
