Iran took another giant leap towards a maiden FIFA World Cup knockout-stage appearance after fighting to a robust 0-0 stalemate with Belgium at the SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

Under the spotlight due to the controversy surrounding the pre-tournament logistical issues and public outcry on social media, the team known as ‘Team Melli’ put up a concerted display against one of the biggest names of the tournament and enhanced their Group G standing.

Iran stifled the offensive unit packed with attacking talent on the Belgian roster and prevented Belgium stars Kevin De Bruyne and Leandro Trossard from dictating terms as they created opportunities on their end. Mehdi Taremi initially believed he had put the Iranians in front, but his shot was disallowed upon review.

A spectacular performance from custodian Alireza Beiranvand was pivotal for Iran, who made crucial saves in the contest to preserve their clean sheet, and the shot-stopper made a significant intervention in the second half to make sure they did not concede a goal. The Iranians also pushed hard for the winning goal after Belgium were reduced to 10 men.

Despite questions surrounding their transportation logistics and available training time before the tie, the players were full of fight and togetherness. “We have great team spirit, “ the team’s wide man, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, revealed. “We play much better under difficult circumstances.”

The stalemate briefly catapulted Iran to the summit of Group G standings, and they sit on the brink of creating history, with a win against Egypt in their last group tie enough to make it into the second round. Iran’s dreams of World Cup history live on for now.
