Controversial Nigerian street singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has stirred a wave of outrage following his reaction to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London after battling an undisclosed illness.
In a video currently making the rounds online, Portable delivered a blistering message while referencing the October 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting — a tragic event that saw security forces allegedly open fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters. The singer placed the blame squarely on the late former president.
“The man that said they should shoot our people at the Lekki Still Gate is dead. Let us do good. May he die again in Heaven,” Portable said, making the sign of the cross mockingly. “He was the one that ordered the shooting, not Tinubu. He died in London.”
Portable, known for his chaotic persona and unfiltered views, didn’t hold back in the emotionally charged footage. Despite the weight of his accusations, he pivoted the message into a moral lesson for Nigerians, calling for a more righteous way of life.
“Do Good because of tomorrow…..” he wrote in the caption accompanying the post.
The video has since drawn intense reactions from both fans and critics alike. While some praised Portable for boldly speaking his truth, others condemned the timing and insensitivity of his remarks, especially as the nation comes to terms with the passing of a former head of state.
The #EndSARS protest, particularly the events at the Lekki Toll Gate, remains one of the most haunting episodes in Nigeria’s recent history. Many Nigerians still demand accountability and justice for the lives reportedly lost on that night — a night that changed the political consciousness of a generation.
Portable’s remarks have once again cemented his place as one of the most polarising figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry — a man unafraid to speak, no matter how controversial the moment.
