Due to the hike in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol or fuel) the National Labour Congress has declared a Nationwide strike, which begins on June 7. It wrote to all its 43 affiliates telling them to get prepared for the strike.
According to the letter sent out, the strike action was a unanimous decision, from the National Executive meeting which held on June 2nd, to fight against the fraudulent increase in fuel prices. National leaders are directed to mobilise their members for the strike, and that all sectors be closed by Wednesday.
“Please be informed that the nationwide action will commence on Wednesday, 7th June, 2023. To this effect, all National Leadership are expected to mobilise their members and ensure full compliance with the directives as services in both the public and private sector are expected to be fully withdrawn by Wednesday, 7th June, 2023. All Presidents and General Secretaries are expected to help ensure the implementation of the decisions of the National Executive Council,” the NLC remarked.”
This whole issue, started when the President in his inauguration speech, revealed that Fuel Subsidy has been removed, immediately that statement was made, Nigerians were thrown into hardship as fueling stations were hoarding fuels and the ones that sold, sold at extreme high prices.
The NLC wrote a letter to the president, asking him to do something about this whole issue, however to crown the whole issue, the NNPC revealed the new prices for fuel and they were outrageous, this led to the NLC convening an emergency meeting on June 2nd to decide on what to do.
