President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 while visiting Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday. The 81-year-old Democrat is experiencing mild symptoms and has chosen to self-isolate at his Delaware beach house, according to the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced the positive test result, stating that the President is “vaccinated and boosted” and “experiencing mild symptoms.” Biden was scheduled to deliver a speech to the Latino civil rights group UnidosUS but cancelled due to his diagnosis.
Despite his illness, Biden told reporters, “I feel good,” as he boarded Air Force One to depart Las Vegas. However, he was seen holding the railing tightly and pausing several times while climbing the stairs.
This development comes at a critical time for Biden, who is facing pressure from fellow Democrats to drop his re-election campaign. Recent polls indicate that 40% of Democratic registered voters believe Biden should step aside, citing concerns about his age and ability to lead.
Biden has been defiant in the face of these calls, stating that only the “Lord Almighty” could persuade him to quit the race. Despite his determination, the President’s illness may impact his campaign trail schedule, which is currently unclear.
The White House has assured the public that Biden will continue to carry out his duties fully while self-isolating, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control guidelines. His symptoms are mild, and he has received an initial dose of Paxlovid, according to his doctor.
This is not Biden’s first bout with COVID-19. He previously tested positive in July 2022 and experienced a rebound case in August 2022.
