President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the esteemed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His ascension to this prominent position was declared during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, which took place in the capital city of Guinea-Bissau, Bissau.
President Tinubu, following in the footsteps of President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, will now take charge as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, assuming a pivotal role in regional affairs. In a statement made during his inauguration, Tinubu emphasized the significance of democracy, stating, “We will take democracy seriously, for despite its arduous nature, it remains the finest form of governance.”
The ECOWAS chairmanship is a prestigious position that rotates among the member countries on a yearly basis. Notably, former President Muhammadu Buhari had previously held this position from 2018 to 2019. As the chairman, President Tinubu will play a strategic role in conflict resolution, advocacy, and maintaining close coordination with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, who oversees the implementation of ECOWAS policies and decisions.
President Tinubu’s journey to assume the ECOWAS chairmanship began with his arrival in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, on Saturday. During the 63rd Ordinary Session, he not only took part in the official proceedings but also seized the opportunity to visit the Nigerian contingent stationed in the country as part of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Force. This visit aimed to reinforce ties and demonstrate his commitment to regional stability.
This recent achievement follows President Tinubu’s active participation in a global summit centered around the theme of “A new global financing pact.” The summit, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, provided a platform for engaging in international discussions on critical economic matters.
Prior to the official announcement, Bayo Onanuga, a media aide to the President, had already disclosed that President Tinubu would assume the ECOWAS chairmanship on the Sunday of the 63rd Ordinary Session. This summit marked President Tinubu’s first official engagement within Africa since assuming office on May 29, 2023, signifying Nigeria’s dedication to regional collaboration and leadership in West Africa. As he assumes this leadership position, all eyes will be on his efforts to promote regional cooperation, resolve conflicts, and advance the interests of West African nations.
