Russian President Vladimir Putin has stepped into the diplomatic arena, engaging with key regional stakeholders, including Iran, Israel, Syria, Egypt, and the Palestinian leadership. The primary objective of these discussions is to facilitate a much-needed ceasefire amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Given Russia’s established relationships with various Middle Eastern powers, including Iran, Hamas, leading Arab nations, as well as both the Palestinians and Israel, Moscow has persistently emphasized the necessity of establishing an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, which it believes the United States and Western nations have overlooked.
According to Kremlin sources, Putin held phone conversations with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Furthermore, he has plans to engage with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the near future. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Kremlin’s foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov highlighted the immediate need to halt the violence and initiate a comprehensive political resolution.
While the outcomes of these discussions remain unclear, reports suggest that both Putin and Assad have advocated for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Additionally, Putin’s upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping signifies an effort to strengthen the partnership between the two largest strategic rivals of the United States.
Amid accusations of Western attempts to fragment Russia through support for Ukraine, Putin has criticized U.S. policies in the Middle East, citing the ongoing conflict as evidence of their failure. Nevertheless, Russia has consistently warned of the potential for a rapid escalation leading to a broader regional conflict. Aligning with China, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia has emphasized the need for justice for the Palestinians, supporting their aspirations for statehood in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as the capital.
In a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for a ceasefire to halt the bloodshed in Israel, underscoring the necessity for major global powers to proactively avert a humanitarian catastrophe. The urgent appeal stressed the imperative need for the Security Council to take action and for significant powers to play an active role in restoring peace and establishing an emergency humanitarian channel to prevent further devastation.
