The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) called for a five-day warning strike after the federal government failed to meet its demands.
This was effectively announced after an extraordinary meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held on Monday.
Doctors say the strike will begin on Wednesday, May 17, and end on Monday, May 22.
On April 29, NARD gave the federal government a two-week ultimatum to take industrial action if it did not comply with the agreement. However, the ultimatum ended on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
Physicians are demanding an immediate increase in the consolidated physician salary structure, equivalent to 200 percent of the current total physician salary, and new allowance increases detailed in a letter from the Association of Doctors to the Minister of Health. Osaggy Ehanile said he included July 7, 2022, for the CONMESS review.
They demanded immediate payment of the 2023 Physician Resident Training Fund (MRTF) in agreement with a stakeholder meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Health.
They also demanded the commencement of arrears on all wages due to union members, including 2014, 2015, and 2016 delinquencies and the resulting minimum wage adjustment.
