The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the destruction of three two-story structures on Banana Island in Lagos as a result of the collapse of a seven-story building there two weeks ago.
On a tour of the construction sites in and around Banana Island on Saturday, Sanwo-Olu gave the order, stating that the demolition of a two-story building at 310 Close is because it is an illegal structure without approval.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also commanded the demolition of two-story structures at 306 Close, claiming that they were being constructed under the power lines and water.
Governor Sanwo-Olu charged that the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWAR) and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing were both responsible for the extensions of buildings into the waterways.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the extensions were carried out without the Lagos State government’s consent.
The governor promised to punish the police who would also be found responsible, adding that they will also be punished. The governor accused developers of the shoddy and unlawful construction of structures that causes collapses.
