Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of using his administration’s economic policies to shield the political class from accountability, claiming that his only “achievement” so far is covering up crimes.
In a video broadcast, Kuti criticised the current government, arguing that the economic hardships Nigerians are facing were deliberately imposed to protect corrupt elites from being exposed or prosecuted.
“Nigerians, I want you to understand that when they say this President has made tough decisions to protect the country, see, the only thing the president has done is to cover up crimes upon crimes,” he said.
“And in order for those crimes to be covered up, the bravery needed to do that is wickedness. He [President Tinubu] impoverished the whole Nigerians because in crime something has been taken.”
The Grammy-nominated singer also took aim at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over comments made during his recent media chat, where he addressed a new opposition coalition.
Kuti said Wike’s main issue with the coalition appeared to be their interest in disrupting the existing political system.
“Wike and the other politicians who support Asiwaju [Tinubu] are fighting for the status quo. The noise they are making… If you listen to what Wike was saying at his media chat with a political ear, he is asking the opposition coalition politicians if they want to scatter the status quo.”
He further alleged that Wike was expressing frustration that those opposing the president are ungrateful, despite all Tinubu has done to protect the political elite.
“He said this man [President Tinubu] is protecting all of us. When I say all of us, I don’t mean ordinary Nigerians. I’m referring to the political class; the rich, crooked, and corrupt Nigerian elites. That was what Wike was shouting at his media chat,” Kuti stated.
Mocking Wike’s performance during the chat, Kuti quipped, “Wike’s recent media chat deserves some plots of land, in my books… Wike said during Rotimi Amaechi’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State, his [Amaechi’s] wife was collecting N4 billion per month. I wished he mentioned how many years that she received the money.”
