Several veteran Ukrainian officials announced their resignations from office on Tuesday, January 24 as the defense ministry was turned upside down by a food procurement scandal and the presidency warned of tough anti-graft measures.

The defense ministry had announced the resignation of a deputy minister, Vyacheslav Shapovalov, who had been in charge of the army’s logistical support.

The resignation is coming after the ministry was accused of signing food contracts at increased costs.

While remarking that the accusations were baseless, the ministry had also said Shapovalov’s departure will help preserve the trust of both the society and international partners.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the presidential office was also among the officials who had stepped down.

According to Tymoshenko on social media, he had submitted a resignation letter and thanked the president for the trust and opportunity to do good deeds every day and every minute.

He had also posted a photo of himself holding a handwritten resignation letter but had not given reasons for the decision.

It is no news that Tymoshenko was implicated in several scandals during his tenure, including in October 2022 when he was accused of using a car donated to Ukraine for humanitarian purposes for his joyride.
