Shopify shares jumped about 8% Tuesday after Meta integrated its Muse artificial intelligence agent with Shopify’s Shop Pay checkout system, allowing the AI assistant to browse Shopify-powered stores and complete purchases on behalf of users.
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke announced the partnership on X on Monday, saying it would enable “agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores, offering people an easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse”. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the deal in his own post, writing: “Teaming up with Shopify to make shopping and checkout easier in Muse. Shoppers find more. Shops sell more. More partnerships like this coming soon”.
The integration is built on Shop Pay, Shopify’s one-tap checkout service that stores buyers’ shipping and billing information to speed up future transactions.

The Amazon Contrast
The partnership highlights a growing divide in how major e-commerce platforms are responding to AI shopping agents. Amazon has blocked Muse from browsing and purchasing products on its marketplace, saying it had not authorized the agent to access customer accounts, collect data, or process transactions.
Amazon has also limited access for other AI shopping tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Alphabet’s Gemini, and Perplexity’s Comet.
“Amazon says an external agent must also respect the marketplace’s decision about whether to let it operate there,” according to reports. Shopify has taken the opposite approach, opening its merchant ecosystem to Muse through Shop Pay.
Investor Reaction
Shopify stock rose 7.9% to $148.85 on Tuesday after gaining 7.3% on Monday . Meta stock slipped slightly as investors weighed the checkout economics being shared with a partner.
Deutsche Bank analysts characterized the deal as further proof that leading AI platforms are integrating with Shopify’s commerce infrastructure. “We believe the partnership helps refute the recent bear thesis that AI agents and personal shoppers could disintermediate Shopify and its large payments business,” analyst Bhavin Shah wrote. “In fact, the partnership suggests the opposite and reinforces Shopify’s core strengths: structured product data through Shopify Catalog, merchant connectivity, trusted checkout through Shop Pay, and the underlying infrastructure required to complete an order”.
Jefferies raised its price target on Meta to $875, noting that Muse has turned out to be a “killer product” that “flips the narrative” on Meta’s AI ambitions. J.P. Morgan claimed Muse has the potential to become the most widely used consumer AI application since ChatGPT.
Shopify’s AI Momentum
The Meta partnership is Shopify’s second major AI commerce deal in recent weeks. OpenAI last week selected Shopify as its first e-commerce partner, allowing merchants to manage ChatGPT advertising campaigns directly through Shopify
“Shopify is benefiting from its role in the infrastructure layer underpinning AI-driven commerce rather than being at risk of displacement,” TD Cowen analyst John Shao wrote.
Shopify’s gross merchandise volume hit $115.6 billion in the second quarter, up 32% year-over-year, while revenue climbed 36% to $3.58 billion. The company described it as a “monster quarter,” noting that AI is boosting the business.
The Bottom Line
Shopify and Meta have partnered to let Meta’s Muse AI agent complete purchases on Shopify stores using Shop Pay. The deal sent Shopify stock up 8% and highlights a growing divide in AI shopping: Shopify is opening its ecosystem to AI agents, while Amazon is blocking them. Analysts say the partnership refutes concerns that AI agents could disrupt Shopify’s business, instead reinforcing its role as the infrastructure layer for AI-driven commerce.
My Opinion
Amazon is making a mistake. By blocking Meta’s Muse agent from browsing and purchasing on its marketplace, Amazon is trying to protect its turf. But it is fighting the future. AI shopping agents are coming. The question is not whether people will use them. It is which platforms will benefit when they do.
Shopify has made the smarter bet. By opening its ecosystem to Muse through Shop Pay, Shopify is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer for AI commerce. It is not competing with the agents. It is powering them. That is why the stock jumped 8%. Investors understand what Amazon does not: in the AI era, the winners will be the platforms that make it easy for agents to transact, not the ones that build walls.
Amazon has the scale to resist for a while. But scale becomes a liability when the market shifts. If AI agents become the primary way people shop online, merchants will want to be where the agents are. Amazon is betting that its marketplace is too big to ignore. Shopify is betting that it does not have to be.
Shopify does not have to be the biggest. It just has to be the one the agents can access. Right now, that is a winning position.
