Dignitaries from all over East Africa have begun arriving in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital city, as part of their fresh efforts to mediate between the combating sides in Sudan.
The three-month-long war has dislodged about three million people and it is already endangering the secureness of the entire region.
For this summit, the Sudanese army and its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, are expected to send delegates to represent them.
This meeting is coming after far-reaching reports of crimes committed against the civilian population by the RSF militias in particular have gone unchecked in Darfur.
Recall that the many previous attempts at a ceasefire had little success and the UN has expressed fears of a larger civil war in the country.
Lt. Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Sudan military leader had remarked that he would not make an appearance at the summit after turning down Kenya’s peace efforts for reportedly being biased.
Note that the Kenyan government is the default leader, of the ‘East African countries Intervention’ to Sudan.
Kenya had earlier on, however, promised neutrality on the conflict but it seems that Lt.Gen al-Burhan is not buying it.
More details to come later…
