The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has taken Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, and the other governors of oil-rich states in Nigeria to court, over their failure to account for the spending of the oil derivation refunds of N625bn that was recently paid to them.
The oil derivation refund payments covered 13% of the cost of oil extraction, subsidies, and SURE-P refunds and SERAP is asking the Federal High Court in Abuja, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2371/2022, to order and compel the governors to reveal and widely publish the details of spending of the oil derivation refunds, subsidy, and SURE-P refunds.
The Socio-Economic rights group had also requested that the court urge President Muhammadu Buhari to order the anti-corruption agencies to thoroughly investigate the spending of public funds collected by governors and prosecute suspected corrupt perpetrators where appropriate and the recovery of corrupt proceeds.”
