Chippa United’s towering goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is poised for a potential transfer this summer, with clubs from across the globe expressing interest in securing his services. The 27-year-old shot-stopper’s standout performances for both club and country have garnered attention from clubs in South Africa, Europe, and Saudi Arabia.
Nwabali’s rise to prominence was solidified during his unexpected inclusion in the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON 2023 tournament under Jose Peseiro. Despite being a surprise addition, Nwabali seized the opportunity and showcased his talent on the international stage, displacing Francis Uzoho as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper. His impressive displays, including four clean sheets in seven games, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to claiming the silver medal in Ivory Coast.
The AFCON tournament served as a platform for Nwabali to attract interest from various clubs, with Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, England’s Queens Park Rangers, Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq, and South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs all vying for his signature.
Confirming the ongoing discussions surrounding Nwabali’s future, Chippa United’s CEO, Siviwe Mpengesi, acknowledged that the goalkeeper is seeking new opportunities after deciding not to renew his contract with the club. Mpengesi emphasized Nwabali’s stellar performance at AFCON, noting his recognition as the second-best goalkeeper of the tournament, further fueling interest from abroad.
“We are in talks with several clubs abroad,” Mpengesi revealed in a recent interview with iDiski Times. “Stanley needs something better, especially after his standout performance at the AFCON. If an opportunity arises, whether locally or internationally, that offers him better prospects, we will not stand in his way.”
Nwabali’s contributions to Chippa United this season have been significant, with nine clean sheets and an assist to his name. As speculation swirls regarding his future destination, football enthusiasts await eagerly to see where the talented goalkeeper will ply his trade next.
