Regional tensions between China and Taiwan are escalating as Taiwan’s defense ministry reported on Saturday that it was monitoring “waves” of missile tests in China’s far northern region of Inner Mongolia. Taiwan’s air defense forces are on high alert in response.

Taiwan’s Vigilance

Taiwan, a democratically governed island, opposes China’s claim over it as a territory. Given Beijing’s regular military activities around the island, Taiwan closely monitors Chinese military maneuvers, though it rarely discloses specifics of its observations.

Missile Tests in Inner Mongolia

The Taiwanese defense ministry stated that starting from 4 a.m. (2000 GMT on Friday), it had detected “multiple waves of test launches” by China’s Rocket Force in Inner Mongolia, approximately 2,000 km (1,200 miles) from Taiwan.

While Taiwan’s forces are continuously monitoring the situation and maintaining their air defense alert, the ministry did not provide further details. China’s defense ministry did not respond to calls for comment outside office hours. The Rocket Force manages China’s conventional and nuclear missile arsenal.

Historical Context of Military Exercises

In August 2022, China fired missiles into the waters around Taiwan during military exercises, expressing anger at a visit to Taipei by then-Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. Taiwan operates powerful radar stations on some of its central mountain peaks, which can observe deep into Chinese territory, according to security sources.

Rising Political Tensions

China has increased military pressure on Taiwan since President Lai Ching-te took office in May, labeling him a “separatist.” Despite Lai’s repeated offers for talks, Beijing has consistently rebuffed these overtures. Lai rejects China’s sovereignty claims, asserting that only the people of Taiwan can determine their future.

Bottom Line

The ongoing missile tests by China in Inner Mongolia, coupled with Beijing’s heightened military activities and refusal to engage in dialogue with Taiwan’s leadership, underscore the persistent and growing tensions in the region. Taiwan remains vigilant and prepared to defend its sovereignty amid these developments.
