In secondary school, my fellow students and I were required to wear berets as part of our school uniform. It was a deep red color, almost beet-root like and I hated having to wear it because I couldn’t style it, and I felt it was an unnecessary accessory as it made my head hot!
I graduated from secondary school years ago and thankfully, rid myself of the trauma of (hot) berets but a recent incident that happened to a friend of mine compelled me to think back to my school days and imagine how many women are still struggling with this timeless, French accessory.
With that in mind, I set to work crafting this article to serve as a guide to the girlies who need it. The best part? It’s an easy guide, so you don’t already have to be a fashion maven to be able to wear a beret.
A Short History of Berets
The beret has had a fascinating history that dates as far back to the Bronze Age. During that era, similar headgear was spotted by the ancient agricultural communities in Europe.
However, the modern beret began to take shape in the 17th century in the Basque, France and Spain where it was a popular accessory worn by peasants, particularly shepherds.
In the 19th century, beret-making became industrialized, particularly in southern France. This trend grew so that by the 1920s, berets were associated with the working classes in some regions of France and Spain.
Military units in the late 19th and early 20th centuries also adopted this hair accessory, with the French Chasseurs Alpins being among the first to wear them in 1889, and the British Royal Tank Regiment following suit in the 1920s.
As from and throughout the 20th century, the beret became a symbol of style and rebellion. It was further popularized by artists, activists and celebrities.
Ways to Style a Beret
One vital tip to know before you purchase or start wearing a beret is to find the one that is best fitted to your style and personality. Berets are available in different sizes, colors, and materials, and while it may feel overwhelming at first, you need to take your time to choose one that makes you feel confident and flatters your facial structure.
That said, there are several ways to style a beret. Some of them are:
A. Classic French Belle:
If you’re going for the classic Parisian girl look, then the style tip you need is to wear your beret tilted to one side. As for clothes, you can pair it with a shirt, high-waisted trousers, heels, and a bright, red lip for the ultimate French girl look.
B. Edgy and Modern:
Want a unique look? Style your beret with a leather jacket or blazer and combat boots. The choice of bottoms is entirely up to you but boxy shorts are perfect for adding a bit of edge to your outfit while still keeping it chic.
C. Casual and Cozy:
If you’re interested in a more laid-back vibe, try wearing your beret pulled down over your forehead. For this look, pair it with a an oversized tee and a jean of choice.
