After a 50-year hiatus, the US space agency Nasa has announced the names of the four astronauts who will return humanity to the Moon.
Victor Glover will be the first black astronaut on a lunar mission, while Christina Koch will make history as the first female astronaut ever assigned to one.
Later this year or early in 2025, they will fly a capsule around the Moon with Reid Wiseman and Jeremy Hansen.
Although the astronauts won’t touch down on the Moon, their journey will open the door for another group to do so.
In a ceremony in Houston, Texas, the three US citizens and one Canadian were introduced to the general public. They will now start a period of rigorous training to get themselves ready.
Choosing a woman and a person of color demonstrates that NASA is upholding its commitment to increasing diversity in its exploration activities. White males only made the previous crewed missions to the Moon.
