Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has praised members and leaders of the House of Representatives for rejecting a bill to decriminalize cannabis cultivation, sale, and use in Nigeria on the floor of the National Assembly on Thursday.
Marwa stated that history will never forget those who stood with parents to defend their children from any legislation, in any shape or form, that would convert Nigeria into a nation of junkies and criminals, similar to moving one step forward and ten steps back in the current situation.
Reacting to the development, Marwa stated in a statement issued yesterday by the agency’s Director, Media, and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, that the decision by a majority of MPs to reject the bill would enhance the accomplishments won in the country’s renewed war against drug misuse and trafficking.
He stated that the 2018 drug survey result of 10.6 million Nigerians misusing cannabis alone was cause for concern, adding that the strong link between drug consumption and security concerns across the country was undeniable.
