Following criticism over the handling of a deadly pre-Halloween mob crush, South Korea’s National Assembly passed a motion calling for the removal of Interior Minister Lee Sang-min.
According to Yonhap News, the main opposition party utilized its majority in parliament to pass the resolution, with support from 182 of the 183 lawmakers who voted, and one vote was declared invalid. According to the report, the ruling party, which was opposed to the dismissal motion, boycotted the vote.
Some government officials, including the interior minister, have come under fire for the Halloween night massacre that killed more than 150 people in Seoul.
Mr. Lee apologized for the crush last month, saying the nation bears unlimited responsibility for its citizens’ safety.
According to reports, even though the motion was passed, President Yoon Suk-yeol is widely expected to reject it.
