Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about her fallout with Davido and cleared the air on long-standing rumours linking her to fellow singer Wizkid.
In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club shared on Tuesday, Savage spoke about her December 2023 clash with Davido, while also reflecting on a past relationship she described as “embarrassing.”
The rift with Davido reportedly began after Savage shared an Instagram story featuring Sophia Momodu, the mother of his first child. She explained that the situation was misread, stressing that her friendship with Momodu had developed naturally because of their children.
“Our kids are friends, and they’ve gone to the same school since they were one. They’re 10 now. I’ve known David before that, but I naturally grew a relationship with the mother of their kid. And I didn’t really know there were issues,” she said.
Savage added that what happened at the event where they crossed paths was not as deep as it appeared.
“I guess I was at an event and she was too. Naturally, we greeted each other. He saw that, and he took it the wrong way. I think it was a misunderstanding. He felt like I knew what was happening and was on her side—but that’s not the case. This is just a woman I know, who is the mother of my son’s friend,” she explained.
Following the post, Davido allegedly sent Savage stern messages, including a warning to “be careful in Lagos,” which she interpreted as a threat. Concerned, she filed a police petition.
On whether she believed Davido would carry out the threat, she replied: “I don’t think he was ever going to carry it out. David is such a joyful person, and I know he didn’t mean it the way it sounded… I always put our kids first, and that’s why I feel I have to be respectful to the mother of a child. It’s all about love.”
Savage insisted the clash was simply miscommunication rather than a major fight. “Even if I did know, I don’t think I would have chosen a side. It’s not my business to take sides,” she said.
Speaking on why she went to the police, the singer explained that it was about ensuring safety.
“I reached out to members of his family before I did anything. I was hearing threats and asked if we could resolve it, but none of them came back to me. I just wanted to ensure safety for everyone involved, and that’s why I filed a petition. It wasn’t about revenge,” she said.
Despite the drama, Savage maintained that she holds no animosity toward Davido.
“I want everyone to know there’s no bad blood. I haven’t spoken to him, but I love him, and I always put our kids first. That’s what matters,” she added.
The singer also clarified longstanding rumours about Wizkid, denying that he was the mystery man she once referred to in connection with a private relationship.
“Shout out to Wizkid. I love Wizkid. I respect Wizkid. It’s not about him,” Savage said.
According to her, the relationship in question involved a public figure but not an artiste. She described it as toxic and emotionally draining.
“At the time, I didn’t see how bad it was. It chipped away at my confidence, and it comes through in my music. I hadn’t even been able to perform that song because of how it made me feel. It’s embarrassing to think I let that happen,” she revealed.
Savage closed by admitting the experience was painful but also shaped her artistry. “I haven’t been able to perform … It was tough,” she said, noting that the lessons from that season now fuel her storytelling in music, where themes of love, heartbreak, and resilience remain central.
