Donald Trump claimed on Monday that his administration deserved recognition for recent price reductions introduced by Walmart, although the retail giant’s statement announcing the cuts did not attribute the decision to the administration.
The president has come under increasing criticism over persistent inflation during his administration, with prices rising first in the wake of his tariff policies and later following the outbreak of the Iran war in late February. Trump dismissed a recent bipartisan proposal aimed at reducing housing costs as “a yawn” and argued that Democrats were responsible for inflation remaining high.

As the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress, draw closer, Donald Trump has intensified attacks on Democrats, accusing them of embracing communist ideals and supporting greater government intervention in private businesses. However, in a recent social media post, Trump claimed that Walmart reduced prices following a direct request from his administration.
“I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices by a lot, at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” Trump said. “Walmart will, in particular, be dropping the price for a pound of ground beef by almost 15%, among many other products.”
According to its quarterly earnings released in May, Walmart has partly benefited from higher inflation during Donald Trump’s administration, as more consumers turned to its stores and online platform in search of lower-priced goods.
