According to NBC News, Donald Trump’s legal team has been notified to expect a possible indictment in connection with a federal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The investigation, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, focuses on actions taken by Trump to challenge his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
During his final months in office, Trump allegedly pressured officials with baseless claims of widespread voter fraud. Subsequently, his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, attempting to disrupt the certification of Biden’s victory.
On July 18, Trump revealed that he had received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith, informing him that he is a target of the investigation.
Trump’s lawyers reportedly met with officials at the Justice Department, including Special Counsel Smith, but the exact timing of the potential indictment was not specified. Such meetings between defense attorneys and federal prosecutors are not uncommon before an indictment is filed.
It’s worth noting that Trump is already the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges. He has consistently portrayed these charges as politically motivated and akin to a witch hunt.
If an indictment is issued in the election case, it would mark the second round of federal charges brought forth by Special Counsel Smith, who was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in November.
Previously, Trump’s attorneys met with officials at the Justice Department, including Special Counsel Smith, before a grand jury in Miami indicted Trump in June. Trump pleaded not guilty to the 37-count indictment, which accused him of unlawfully retaining classified government documents after leaving office in 2021 and obstructing justice, alleging that he jeopardized sensitive U.S. national security secrets.
Earlier charges against Trump were brought in March when a Manhattan grand jury indicted him on 34 charges, to which he pleaded not guilty. The charges accused him of falsifying business records related to a payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep her silence about a sexual encounter she claimed to have had with him before the 2016 election.
Despite the legal challenges, Trump is leading the pack of Republican presidential candidates as he seeks a potential rematch with Joe Biden in the upcoming elections.
