According to authorities, a 43-year-old man from Tajikistan carried out a violent act at Moldova’s primary international airport on Friday. After being denied entry, the man took hold of a firearm and fatally shot two security officers while also injuring a civilian. Subsequently, the man himself was injured and apprehended by the police. As a result, flights at Chisinau International Airport were temporarily halted.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that during the incident, the shooter managed to seize a weapon from a border police official who was accompanying him.

President Maia Sandu confirmed that the two individuals who lost their lives were a border guard and an airport security officer, expressing condolences for the tragic event.

Moldova, a country with a population of 2.6 million, gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is actively striving to become a part of the European Union. Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Moldova has become a frequently utilized transit point for flights taken by neighboring Ukrainians.
