The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured the conviction of two individuals — Tobilola Olamide, popularly known as “TobiNation,” and Babatunde Peter Olaitan, also known as “TDollar” — for tampering with the Nigerian currency.
Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, delivered the ruling on Thursday, May 8, 2025, sentencing both individuals to six months in prison each, with the option to pay a fine of N200,000.
The defendants were arraigned separately on one-count charges of currency abuse, which contravenes Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007. Both parties pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to the EFCC, the offense took place on April 8, 2025, during a party held at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi. Viral TikTok videos showed the duo dancing and spraying N200 notes, an act prohibited under Nigerian law.
During the court proceedings, EFCC investigative officer Ibrahim Bukar revealed that the Commission launched a TikTok-driven investigation on April 10, which led to identifying and inviting the suspects for questioning.
“Olaitan admitted to spraying the Naira at a nightclub after a fan gifted him a bundle of N200 notes,” Bukar told the court.
The prosecution team, led by counsels C.C. Okezie and H.U. KofarNaisa, presented video clips and extrajudicial statements from the defendants as evidence, all of which were accepted by the court.
Justice Owoeye, while delivering the sentence, emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of the national currency, stating that actions like those of the defendants “undermine the integrity of the Naira.”
