South African sensation Laura ‘Tyla’ Seethal sent shockwaves in the Afrobeats universe as she took home Top Afrobeats Artist at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs), which took place on December 12 in Los Angeles. Tyla beat Nigerian heavyweights Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, and Asake to win the category, further propelling her already fast-rising career to new heights.
Tyla’s hit single Water also won the Top Afrobeats Song* award, joining the ranks of heavyweights like Tems’ *Me & U* and Adam Port & Stryv’s Move. With three nominations in the category, Tyla was leading the pack in a class of her own as the global Afrobeats force.
This isn’t Tyla’s first victory over Nigeria’s finest. In November, she won the Best Afrobeats award at the MTV European Music Awards, outshining the same lineup of stars. Her back-to-back wins signal a new era for Afrobeats, with Tyla at the forefront, redefining the genre’s reach and representation on the world stage.
