Students of the University of Ibadan have criticised the proposed 750% fees increment for new students admitted into the university.
According to a press release, the President of the Student’s Union of the University, Samuel Tobiloba, and the General Secretary, Olaniyi Dolapo, had both requested a meeting with the management to rectify the adjustments.
The Union, had through the statement, remarked that they had received the shocking news of the unexpected opening of the portal and increment in fees for the new students.
The union had said that the fees reflecting on the portal ranged from N133,500 to N372,500 apart from the utility and technology levies of N20,000 each student was expected to pay.
“In an attempt to clarify this issue, we reached out to the university management and it was confirmed that the opening of the portal was a demo process in anticipation for the beginning of the payment and registration processes and there was a plan for the fees increment ranging from N133,500 to N238,500, the utility and technology levies aside (which totalled N80,000).
“We note with concern that this increment represents about 450%-750% of the previous bundle fee which ranged from about N20,000 – N30,000.
This development is coming at a time when several students are finding it hard to cope with the present school fees regime, and the surging costs of living in the country.
“The union condemns this fess increment in strong terms, and requests that this proposed increment be reverted to the status quo.
“We are equally requesting a meeting with the university management towards resolving this issue,” the statement read.
The body also asked students, particularly freshers, to exercise patience while the union tried to resolve the increment with the management.
