Charlie Collins, the United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and promote stability in the region.

On Tuesday, the British Defence Staff for West Africa announced the visit, stating that it would serve as an opportunity to see UK-Nigeria defence cooperation in action firsthand.

“Welcome to Nigeria, Lt Gen Sir Charlie Collins KBE DSO, UK Deputy CDS (MSO),” the post read.
“In Maiduguri with @HQNigerianArmy colleagues, seeing UK-Nigeria defence cooperation first-hand and supporting Nigeria-led efforts to strengthen security and regional stability.”

The visit follows a few months after President Bola Tinubu’s trip to the United Kingdom, during which he emphasised that Nigeria’s partnership with the UK is crucial in addressing terrorism in the Sahel region.

Tinubu made the remarks during a state banquet held at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle, which was hosted in his honour during his official state visit to the United Kingdom in March.

Speaking before members of the British royal family, Tinubu highlighted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting shared democratic values, literary connections, and the Nigerian diaspora, which he described as “the strongest bridge between our two countries.”

He said the visit was aimed at deepening bilateral ties and fostering “a future rooted in partnership, mutual respect, and common values.”

Tinubu also highlighted Nigeria’s contribution to efforts to stabilise the Sahel region, which continues to face persistent jihadist insurgency.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel,” the president said.
“Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability. In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential, and I look forward to my meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer tomorrow.
“Despite these challenges, Nigeria approaches the future with hope and confidence.”
