Several students of the University of Benin, UNIBEN are reportedly trapped in a storey building after it crumbled in the state.
According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the incident occurred on Ekhator Street, in Ekosodin, a popular area for student housing.
From the reports gathered, the building had collapsed after a torrential downpour on Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State and as at the time of filing this report, rescue operations are still ongoing.
One of the students, who sought anonymity, had revealed that a university rescue team had managed to extract some of the trapped student although several were badly injured.
He also added that the injured victims were immediately rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the Dean of Students from UNIBEN had reported to the scene of the catastrophe, coordinating rescue efforts together with the university team.
At press time, the university management has yet to release an official statement about the cause of the building collapse or the total number of individuals affected by the incident.
