The Enugu State Government has warned the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, against the planned disturbance of the ongoing West African Examination Council, WAEC, examination on May 30.
The state government had issued the warning in a statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Aka Eze Aka, on Wednesday.
Aka had declared that illegal IPOB illegal activities would not be condoned in the state and had encouraged residents and students to go about their exams and normal activities on that day, promising them adequate security.
He also remarked that the state government had been deeply concerned over IPOB’s statement directing WAEC to postpone the General Mathematics (Theory and Objectives) examinations scheduled for May 30, the day IPOB slated for “Biafra Heroes Day.”
The commissioner had also harped on the fact that Igbos as a tribe “were renowned for excelling on the wings of industry, education and human capital development”. He further said that any pronouncement or action that verged on denying children their rights to education, which is their ticket to the future, was just plain offensive.
What They’re Saying:
The Commissioner for Information and Communication was quoted to have said:
“Many of the architects of such an unjust and evil agenda live in the comfort of civilized societies where they go to work and their children go to school every workday.“The government will not sit by and watch the future of our children aborted by such ill-conceived pronouncement intended to keep them at home.
“WAEC, as the name implies, is a regional body not just in Nigeria, but across West Africa.
“The subregion will certainly not wait for us,” he said.
What This Means
The Enugu State Government’s firm stance in opposing any disruption to the WAEC exams, especially the one planned by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) shows the state government’s commitment to maintaining order and security for the duration of the exams.
The government has assured its students and residents of adequate security come May 30, with the encouragement that they should go about their exams and daily activities with no fear.
This is just as well since WAEC is a regional body affecting all of West Africa, and any delays or disruption in one region/area of the continent cannot halt the entire region’s educational schedule.
