Chris Hughton, the newly appointed Technical Director of Ghana’s senior national team, has expressed his satisfaction at the appointment and hinted at his wish to play a larger part with the Black Stars following next month’s two-legged World Cup Qualifying play-off against arch-rivals Nigeria.
He stated it’s a pleasure to work for Ghana in his first interview following the interim appointment.
“Yes, and I’m a high-energy individual. Ghana will be a part of my life. Ghana has two World Cup play-off games versus Nigeria, and my father was born in Ghana.”
Hughton was adamant that he was not the Technical team’s head coach and was merely serving as a back-up plan.
“I am just a technical advisor and my duty for these two games will be to assist the coach and his staff but I’m eager to return and have a lot to contribute,” the former Ireland footballer said.
Hughton was named Technical Advisor to Ghana’s new Technical Team by the Ghana Football Association. Otto Addo, a former Black Stars player, has been named temporary head coach, with assistant coaches Masud-Dididi Dramani and George Boateng.
At a meeting held in Accra on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council made the decision. Otto Addo, ex-Black Stars defender, was poached from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund where he was assistant coach and has over 13 years coaching experience in Europe starting from his days with Hamburger SV in 2009.
Prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, the 46-year-old served as a scout for the Black Stars in 2013.
