Chelsea’s search for stability after the departure of Enzo Maresca reportedly has brought them to Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, a young English coach whose non-traditional path to coaching has most impressed the Blues’ hierarchy. At 41, Rosenior has shown that he is a modern, tactically flexible manager, media-aware, and already aware of the complicated BlueCo’s multi-club model.
Rosenior played at clubs like Fulham, Reading, Hull City, and Brighton. However, it was his change of career to coaching that really marked his rise. Post-retirement, he went into Brighton’s academy and led the under-23s while at the same time writing as a football columnist and appearing as a pundit, roles which helped him hone his tactical acumen and communication skills.

At Derby County, he first got a shot at senior coaching as assistant to the manager Wayne Rooney. Rosenior has talked about this time being crucial for his progression, especially in the areas of player management and working under pressure. Rosenior was given the caretaker role after Rooney left, during which he impressed enough to get a permanent role at Hull City in 2022. Rosenior was able to lead Hull to a seventh-place finish in the Championship in the 2023-24 season, just missing out on the playoffs, and he was then fired.
Strasbourg was quick to react and sign him in 2024, and Rosenior has since demonstrated in France, despite the language challenge, qualities like intelligence, flexibility, and determination. Besides the tactical aspect, he likes a pretty changeable system which can swap from a trio of defenders to a back four, and is mainly based on high pressing and positional play, a style which fits the current Chelsea squad very well.
Being at ease with youngsters and having the confidence of the BlueCo family already, Rosenior would be viewed as an instructor who could fine-tune Chelsea’s plan rather than start from scratch. Clever in the media, calm and confident, he seems ready now to take on the biggest test at Stamford Bridge.
